Sub-Logic's Jet was a major release for the new platforms, as were Starglider and the tank simulator Arcticfox. InGolgo Top Secret Episode featured first-person shooter levels and included a sniper rifle for assassinating an enemy agent at long range using an unsteady sniper scope.

The first major influential FPS was Wolfenstein 3Dwhich has been credited with creating the basic archetype upon which subsequent titles were based. This game popularized the genre and lead to the next major FPS hit, DOOMwhich broke many of the boundaries in Wolfenstein and set the bar for several years worth of games.

DOOM was so popular that many subsequent games in the next few years were referred to as "Doom clones". The first landmark, best-selling console first-person shooter was Rare 's GoldenEyebased on the James Bond film and released on the Nintendo 64 in Highly acclaimed for its atmospheric single-player levels and well designed multiplayer maps, it featured the ability to aim at a precise spot on the screen, a sniper rifle, and headshots.
