During the recording of the album, her cancer progressed to the point that she was in immense pain. A cancerous tumor paralyzed her right arm in early leading to live performances with her arm held in a fixed position.
InRiperton was installed as the lead vocalist of the psychedelic soul band the Rotary Connectionwhich debuted that year with a self-titled LP on Cadet Concepts; the singles "Amen" and "Lady Jane" found a home on underground FM radio, but the group failed to make much of an impression on mainstream outlets. After the Rotary Connection dissolved in the wake of 's Hey Love, she and Rudolph took a two-year sabbatical in Florida before relocating to Los Angeles, where she sang on Stevie Wonder 's Fulfillingness' First Finale and toured as a member of his backing unit Wonderlove. Wonder agreed to co-produce Riperton 's album, Perfect Angelwhich contained the international blockbuster "Lovin' You.
By this time, however, commercial woes were the least of Riperton 's concerns.
Diagnosed with breast cancer, she underwent a mastectomy inlater becoming a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society and earning a Society Courage Award from then-President Jimmy Carter. In her recordings, Riperton's highest recorded note reached in the whistle register was F7 on the third scale of "You Take My Breath Away". Mariah Carey cited Riperton as an influence on her.
It included interviews with her husband Richardson Marc, daughter Mayasister Sandra Riperton, and many others who worked with her. Riperton joined with established jazz guitarist George Bensonto kick-off a co-headlining North American concert tour.
