The jealous love rival who tried to erase all trace of Monet's muse
One of his first landscape paintings is shown in a municipal exhibition of Le Havre. Monet decides to become a painter. April Monet is called up for seven years of military service which he breaks off after one year, however, on account of typhoid fever.
There, he meets the Dutch marine painter Johan Barthold Jongkind with whom he does outdoor landscape studies. For the first time, Monet asks his friend Bazille for money, as he often does in the years to come.
Monet shows two maritime paintings in the Salon; encouraged by the positive reviews, he ambitiously starts a large-format figurative painting, The Picnic. In the families moved out of the Hoschede family home and into a home in Poissy. In they moved west along the Seine to a rented home at Giverny.
During this time the couple managed to create a secure situation for all the children though they did face difficulties and discussed separating at different times. In Ernest Hoschede died leaving an opportunity for Monet to marry Alice which finally happened in The marriage was followed by nearly 20 years of stability for the combined family. Fellow impressionist Gustave Courbet was one of the witnesses.
But Ernest lost everything and fled to Belgium to escape his debts. Camille's health deteriorated — the cause has never been fully explained although theories include the after-effects of abortions.
In AugustCamille was close to death and a priest was called to administer the last rites and sanction her marriage to Monet.
She died five days later, aged Monet painted her on her deathbed, overcome by grief. The painting remained in his possession for most of his life. Blue, yellow, grey and so on … my reflexes compelled me to take unconscious action in spite of myself.
